What Does Dynamic Content Mean?

Dynamic content — in the context of gaming — refers to virtual gaming world events that have an ongoing effect on the gaming world and player experience.

Dynamic content is considered an important tool used to create emergent gameplay that complements progression gameplay and maintains ongoing player participation.

Techopedia Explains Dynamic Content

Dynamic content in gaming emerged as an industry buzzword in 2011, but the concept dates back to one of the first massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) — Ultima Online. Ultima gave players great freedom, in terms of game mechanics.

Unexpected loopholes were quickly discovered, and the frequency of virtual killing, rouge gangs, and other degenerate strategies turned off a number of players who were used to a more rule-driven environment.

Such issues put dynamic content on the shelf for many years, because of the difficulties of successful implementation with progression-based games.

However, a rising demand and pressures to create a more engaging MMORPG has returned dynamic content to the forefront of game design.
