By the GNOME Project's own account, the GNOME desktop is the most commonly used desktop environment within GNU/Linux environments. It has become especially popular within Debian and Ubuntu-based distributions. In many of the other more commonly used Linux distributions, GNOME has become one of the default desktop environments that end users have to choose from prior to installing a given Linux distribution.
